By Robin Layton

February is the month of love and hearts, which makes it perfect for
craft time. As we all know, though, it can
also get a bit expensive to buy everyone we
love cute cards full of hearts and flowers in
vibrant pinks and reds. Grandma and Pap would
love to receive a homemade Valentine card with an
irreplaceable personal touch, and what’s more personal than a fingerprint?

The best parts of this quick craft include its inexpensive price tag, and the fact that it’s suitable for all ages.

You’ll need:
• 8.5 x 11 paper, any color
• Watercolor paint trays (available at dollar stores)
• Cup of water
• Brown crayon or marker
Instructions:
• Fold paper in half, into a card.
• If your child likes to draw, have them create a tree with branches
with the brown crayon or marker on the front of the card.
• Have your child dip a finger into the water, then press their finger on top of the paint color they pick (think pink, red or purple for the holiday).
• They can press their paint-covered finger all around the branches, creating “heart leaves” by tilting one print left and the one right, meeting in the middle.
• Let the tree dry, and then have child write a message inside.
Free downloadable trees are available by searching online if drawing isn’t
quite your, or your child’s talent.
